Kirkwood is overpriced, has terribly amenities, and awful customer service. You should not take your family there. The only thing going for it is that is in the middle of nowhere and not crowded -- but the no crowds is because it stinks.
I haven't been here in a few years but it tended to be less crowded on the weekends than some of the other Tahoe-area resorts, probably because it is kind of off the beaten path. I am surprised at how expensive their lift tickets have gotten. Also, when I was there, thye didn't seem to have a whole lot of begineer slopes, but the intermediate and advanced slopes were nice.
